Movie / Film discoveries and rediscoveries. ๐ŸŽž๏ธ

I love good cinema, but often don't have the time to research, or just forget to write down people's recommendations... and just end up watching youtube. So I've made a promise to keep introducing myself to new films, and don't become complacent. I thought I will start a list here, where you're also welcome to add your recent discoveries.

I plan to update the list, every once and a while with fresh additions. ๐Ÿ‘‡

Ruben ร–stlund - a Swedish filmmaker. From whom I've watched and recommend:

  • The Square - a decadent curator faces an existential crisis, as does his gallery, when he hires a public relations team to build some hype for his renowned Swedish museum which ends in disaster.

  • Force Majeure a sensational combination of black comedy, social satire and probing psycho-drama as a model family comes apart on a skiing trip in the French Alps.

Divertimento

At 17, Zahia Ziouani dreams of becoming a conductor while Fettouma, her twin sister, a professional cellist. We follow their journey fighting with the male, upperclass-dominated classical music circles.

Whiplash

A promising young drummer enrolls at a cut-throat music conservatory where his dreams of greatness are mentored by an instructor who will stop at nothing to realize a student's potential.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire

On an isolated island in Brittany at the end of the eighteenth century, a female painter is obliged to paint a wedding portrait of a young woman. And we follow their unusual relationship develop.

The Hunt (2012)

Danish psychological drama film directed by Thomas Vinterberg and starring Mads Mikkelse, following a teacher in a small rural town and how false accusations divide the community and his life.

The Discipline of D.E. (1982) 9 min written by William S. Burroughs

Gus Van Sant's early short film about "The Discipline of D.E.," which is an extremely efficient way of doing things. The concept in this essay, if we can call it that, is something that I find myself returning back to.

ps. a funny story, the way I discovered this was through the vocal in a house track, that was taken from the short film, it fascinated me enough to make wonder where it came from.
